Santa’s Hotel Rakka in Kilpisjärvi has been awarded the Green Key sustainability certificate. Santa’s Hotel Rakka is therefore the northernmost Green Key-certified hotel in Finland.

“We are very happy about this recognition. There is only one Kilpisjärvi, and we are proud to be able to concretely demonstrate our sustainability. This is a good way to continue our daily work for a more sustainable future,” says Santa’s Hotel Rakka’s Hotel Director Jaana Nykänen.

Green Key is an internationally well known tourism sustainability certificate whose criteria are based on the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals. The certificate contains requirements related to:

  • reducing the environmental load
  • increasing social benefits
  • supporting the local economy

Green Key is also a sustainability programme in which the participating companies commit to the continuous development of their operations.  The quality of operations is verified through regular, on-site audits. The certificate is awarded by an external, independent Green Key jury.

Santa’s Hotel Rakka is part of the Santa’s Hotels chain. Five other hotels in the chain have also been awarded Green Key certificates in 2024.

Two Santa’s Hotels destinations in Rovaniemi have been granted the Sustainable Travel Finland -labels by Visit Finland.

In order to achieve the label, the companies need to go through the Sustainable Travel Finland program and meet all the required criteria according to international standards.

”This is great news, and we accept the recognition with pride both at our hotel in the city center and at our igloos in the Arctic Circle. The STF program has helped us to develop our daily processes to be even more sustainable, and from this moment onwards the STF-label will help us to communicate our sustainability actions to our guests as well”, rejoices Pia Virtala, Hotel Director of Santa’s Hotels Rovaniemi hotels.

The set of criteria for the STF-label is updated regularly so that the activities of tourism operators are in line with up-to-date sustainability obligations.

“We are committed to continuous work for sustainability. Our Rovaniemi hotel’s first environmental guidebook was launched 15 years ago, and our sustainability work has since expanded in additon to ecological responsibility also to socio-cultural and economic sustainability. With these official recognitions, it’s good for us to continue on our sustainability path,” continues Virtala.

Santa’s Hotel Santa Claus and Santa’s Igloos Arctic Circle are part of the Santa’s Hotels chain. Santa’s Hotels is a Lappish family-owned hotel chain that offers accommodation and restaurant services in a total of six locations from Kalajoki to Kilpisjärvi.

Santa’s Hotel Tunturi and Santa’s Hotel Aurora, which belong to the Santa’s Hotels hotel chain, have been granted Visit Finland’s Sustainable Travel Finland labels. Tunturi and Aurora are the first hotels in the Santa’s Hotels chain to receive the STF label. The chain is also pursuing for STF labels for its other hotels in the near future.

The Sustainable Travel Finland label is a sustainability label awarded by Visit Finland, which is used to communicate sustainable actions to the tourists. In order to receive the label, companies must go through the STF program and meet all the required criteria according to international standards.

Sustainability work is continuous work, and the STF label is renewed regularly. The brand’s criteria are updated at regular intervals so that the actions of tourism operators meet up-to-date sustainability obligations.

Santa’s Hotel Tunturi and Santa’s Hotel Aurora were also granted the international tourism Green Key sustainability certificates in August 2024.

“It’s great to receive visible recognition for the sustainability work we’ve been doing for a long time in the forms of the Green Key certificate and the STF label. We started the application process in July 2024, when our goal was to get both the Green Key and the STF label by the end of 2024. This goal was clearly fulfilled, and this is a good spot to continue with our daily sustainability work,” says Santa’s Hotel Tunturi’s hotel director My Manner.

“We are proud that we have completed both the Green Key certificate and the STF label so quickly. We understand very well that it is a sustainable tourism development path and we are committed to taking this sustainable path forward by constantly developing our operations”, continues Santa’s Hotel Aurora’s hotel director Terhi Kangas.

The Green Key certificate is the tourism industry’s leading standard of excellence in environmental sustainability and sustainable operations. This prestigious certificate represents the companies’ commitment that their premises meet the strict criteria set by the Foundation for Environmental Education. Green Key assures guests that when choosing to stay at a Green Key certified destination, they are making a sustainable choice.

The high environmental standards expected of Green Key certified companies are maintained through strict documentation and regular audits. In order to receive the Green Key certificate, a company must pass 70 criteria based on reducing the environmental load, increasing social benefits and supporting the local economy.

“Sustainability work is everyone’s business at Santa’s Hotels – the work is done strongly by the entire staff. Our destinations are committed to the continuous sustainability work of the staff and to encouraging our guests and partners to be sustainable,” says Sanna Sandgren, CEO of the Santa’s Hotels chain.

The Green Key certificate is issued for one year at a time, and a further application is made annually.

“Therefore, everyday life will continue as a holder of an internationally recognized sustainability certificate, as an even more sustainable service provider – Green Key certificates are a great recognition of our sustainability work!” Sandgren continues.

The Green Key audits at Santa’s Hotel Tunturi in Saariselkä and Santa’s Hotel Aurora in Luosto were carried out at the beginning of August 2024. The news about the certification decisions of the Green Key jury, which met at the end of the month, were received with enthusiasm.

“We accept the certificates with great pride! We live and work in what are known to be the cleanest environments in the world. The least we can do is take responsibility for our everyday life and, through sustainable tourism, give the opportunity for future generations to live and visit while listening to the conditions of environmental well-being”, rejoice Hotel Managers My Manner and Terhi Kangas.

Santa’s Hotel Tunturi and Santa’s Hotel Aurora are the first Green Key certified hotels of the Santa’s Hotels chain. Certificates have also been applied for other locations, the aim of which is to complete the audits by the end of 2024.
